Tool output
PNG To DDS produces DDS files using a browser based encoder. We aim for correct, standards compliant output, but texture pipelines vary widely between engines, versions, and projects. You should always test a converted file in your target engine and keep your original PNG source as a master copy.
BC7 output note
The BC7 option performs real BC7 block compression in your browser and writes the result with a DX10 header (DXGI_FORMAT_BC7_UNORM), at 8 bits per pixel. The encoder uses BC7 mode 6, a single partition mode that carries colour and alpha together with 16 interpolation steps. It is high quality and widely compatible, but it is not an exhaustive search of every BC7 mode, so a dedicated offline compressor may squeeze out slightly more quality on unusual blocks. For the smallest files, use DXT1 or DXT5; for a lossless master, use the uncompressed RGBA option.
